Chemical Hair Straighteners

For many years chemical hair straighteners were used as a means of straightening natural wavy or curly hair. The process is much the same as doing a perm, which too uses a chemical solution but is used to put waves or curls in hair. Obviously using chemical hair straighteners doesn’t take as long as doing a perm because there are no perm rods to wrap. However the same processing steps must be taken when using chemical hairstraighteners.

What is normally used as the waving lotion for a perm can be actually used to straighten the hair. The lotion is applied to the curly hair. The hair is then combed constantly until the desired results are achiever – until the hair becomes straight enough. Like a perm, the waving lotion is rinsed off and the neutralizer, the second chemical formula used in a perm, is applied. Again it is combed through and left on the hair whatever amount of time is recommended for that particular perm. That was the way most people had their hair straightened. There are actually professional chemical hair straighteners that can be bought but at a much higher price than the products used for a perm.

Until recent years chemical hair straighteners were really the only form of straightening hair unless of course someone was brave enough to use the household flat iron. Most people weren’t interested in straightening their hair but rather making sure it has body, curls and bounce. Nowadays however everyone seems to want the straight hair look. Hair straighteners have taken the place of chemical hair straighteners for the most part. If people have extremely curly hair, they may still opt for the chemical hair straighteners but likely will also use the other hair straighteners to create a silkier and smoother look.
